Describe your current clientele.
A lot of artists, musicians, city ladies, and beautiful girls and boys. This is the first time I haven’t been gone on tour for a while (VAIN note: Carly plays in local favorite bands The Catch and United State of Electronica), so I have more regular clients than ever.
What kinds of hairstyles have you been doing a lot of lately?
Lots of softer, prettier, more natural looking color and cuts. Layers. I’m doing a lot of younger styles on older clients who want to do something fun with their hair. But in general just a lot of variety, classic looks and crazy styles. My hair is like that, too. I like low maintenance and high maintenance.
What’s your approach with new clients?
I usually just try to listen and keep it conservative the first time- I want to get to know you and your hair. Zero pressure to do anything that doesn’t feel completely comfortable!
You’re known for your skills as a hair fixer. True?
True. I like the challenge of helping people out, whether through corrective color or grow-out haircuts. There’s no reason for you to hate your hair the whole time it’s growing out. It’s just a matter of changing the shape a little and where the weight’s falling without taking off length.
What do you do outside of VAIN?
Play music and travel. And do my hair.
