Tell about your specialties.
I’ve been braiding and doing weaves and extensions on friends and family for over 10 years. I love being able to make such dramatic changes for people. I love doing wedding and special event hair and making people look and feel great for a special occasion. Short haircuts are just great. I pay close attention to detail and bone structure to make these work for every individual.
How about coarse hair? That can be a challenging texture to tame.
I have very coarse hair and so do my two daughters so I’ve learned how to work with it very well. It’s a texture I know well so I cut it well!
Weaves don’t always get the love that extensions do. What do you like about them?
Weaves are great because there’s no glue or special bonds, it’s simply braids and string the old-fashioned way. They keep your natural hair healthy and give it a chance to grow. Plus, they work for EVERYONE! Length, body, or whatever you’re looking for. Just be-WEAVE it! 
What’s your secret hair weapon?
Honestly, I’d have to say individuality. Everyone is different so the magic in a great hairstyle is taking a great look and adding a hint of YOU to it. Just whatever makes it feel like YOUR hair, your style. Individuality is fabulous!
Who’s your hair inspiration?
I once did a wonderful woman’s hair who was recovering from cancer. She was very self-conscious when she walked in. By the time she left (we did micro extensions since her hair had just started growing back), her head was high and she walked like a runway model. She’s my inspiration because I want every one of my clients to feel great about themselves after they come see me, whether it’s from a dramatic transformation like hers or just a simple haircut that was just what you needed.
Describe your personal style.
Personally I’m a little bit hip-hop, a little bit country, and a little bit rock and roll…it depends on my mood! I try to keep it timeless so I don’t look back like I do on those 80’s pictures wondering what was I thinking!?
What’s your goal with new clients?
To listen. Listen and listen some more. Pay attention and really focus on what they want. My ultimate goal is to be able to clearly see what their style vision is for themselves.
What’s life outside of VAIN look like for Dez?
My two BEAUTIFUL babygirls and soon to be husband are my world! I like drawing and arts and crafts. Love animals. Ask me sometime about my past as a California-livin’ barrel racer.
