What do you love about doing hair?
I enjoy meeting and getting to know new people. When I get to see the joy it brings them when they feel pretty and good about themselves, it makes me so happy.
Tell us about some of your specialties.
One is working with short to medium length naturally wavy and curly hair. Adding texture and accentuating what they have so people can embrace what their hair does naturally. Layers are also great. There are so many ways to do them and finding the right ones for your style can really make a difference.
What’s your secret weapon and top advice for great hair?
Learning to love what you’ve got. Try not to wash your hair everyday, and use soft curl/antifrizz creams. My current favorite is Davines No 4.
What’s your approach with new clients?
Questions, lots of them. I want to get to know my clients. Are they conservative, outgoing, shy but maybe want to try something fun? I also ask about what don’t they like, so I know what to stay away from. I like it when my clients bring in pictures of likes and dislikes (I’m very visual), even styles they’re drawn to but don’t think they can pull off. I enjoy collaborating and finding a style that works best for them.
What are your style influences?
There are so many styles from every era that I love. I think it’s great that we live in a time when everything seems to be acceptable and we can pick and choose what we want to look like. Whether it’s a Pinup Girl or a cute mod cut from the 60s, Flapper girls from the 20s, 60s- 70s punk, or even a classic bob. It’s all translatable to today’s modern styles.
What inspires you as a hairstylist?
The people I work with. Everyone is so creative and talented (at work and outside of work), and has something special to offer. There’s always more to learn and who better to learn from than our peers.
What’s life outside of VAIN look like for you?
I love spending time with my husband and our little girl. Watching her grow and learn and become her own little person has been the best experience of my life. I also like spending time outdoors, gardening, and arts and crafts.
